Key points

  • Urge is a wave. You need a script, not a debate.
  • Leave the spot where the habit usually happens.
  • Use your body before you use a speech.
  • Do not test yourself with a “quick look.”
  • Ride it for ten minutes, then do a normal task.

How to deal with porn urges is a ten-minute skill. The urge feels like it will last all night and like you will be useless until you give in. Both feelings lie. If you do not feed it, the peak drops. Your job is to not feed it while it is loud.

This is the lesson to open when you are already in it. Read it once now so the steps are boring later.

Do not debate

A debate inside the urge is the urge talking to itself. “Just a minute.” “You earned it.” “You will quit tomorrow.” “Check that it is still there.” Every one of those is enticement, which is the old word in this lesson’s verse. You are being drawn. You do not need a better argument. You need a change of place.

If you are holding the phone, put it down on a surface that is not your hand. If you are sitting where you usually watch, stand up. The script starts with the feet.

Run the same three lines

  1. I leave this spot.
  2. I do one physical thing.
  3. I tell the truth in one sentence, out loud or in a note.

Physical things that work for most men: walk outside or to another room, drink a full glass of water, ten pushups or a flight of stairs, cold water on the face, a shower with a plan to get dressed immediately after. Pick yours in advance. Novelty is not the point. Repetition is.

The sentence can be dull. “Urge. Left the office. Did not open it.” Send it to your witness if you have one. If you do not, the note still counts, and you still need a person soon. See porn addiction recovery for men.

Refuse the test look

The test look is how urges get paid. You tell yourself you are only checking whether you still want it. You do. The image does the rest. There is no safe thumbnail. Close the app. Do not “clear the thought” by glancing.

If an image arrives without your search — a chat, an ad, a clip in a feed — you still do not stay. You leave the app. Staying to be disgusted is still staying.

Let the clock work

Set a timer for ten minutes if you need proof. Do the script. Do not sit and monitor the feeling. When the timer ends, start a normal task with a finish line: trash out, email sent, lunch made, kid’s practice. The urge can still mutter. You are no longer in the chair it owns.

If it returns an hour later, you run the script again. That is not failure. That is the skill.

After a strong one

You may feel proud or you may feel flat. Do not reward a survived urge with a lesser version of the habit. Do not punish a survived urge with a speech about how weak you are for wanting it. Wanting it means the old training is still in you. Leaving means the training is getting interrupted.

Three urges, same script

In bed: the phone is already in your hand. Put it on the floor out of reach, or better, it was never there. Sit up. Feet on the floor. The lie is “I’ll just finish this thought lying down.” Sit up first. Thoughts are easier to leave when your body has left.

In the bathroom: you already made a mistake if the phone came in. Set it outside next time. This time, lock nothing, finish, and leave. Do not “since I’m here.” Since you are here is the whole trap.

At a desk: stand and walk to a window, a printer, a glass of water — something that makes you pass another person if you can. Urges hate witnesses. You do not have to announce it. Being in a hallway is enough to break the private spell.

If the urge comes with a sexual image you did not choose, you still do not study it. Name it “urge,” run the three lines, and get back to the task in front of you. Staring until it fades is still staring.

Practice once today while you are calm. Walk the route from the danger spot to the other room. The rehearsal is awkward and that is fine. In the moment you will not be inventive. You will do what your feet already did this afternoon.

If it lasts longer than ten minutes

Some waves come back. Run the script again without inventing a new one. A second walk is not a failure of the first walk. It means the cue is still in the room, so you leave again. If you can change the rest of the evening — go to a store, sit in the living room with other people, start a chore that dirties your hands — do that. Staying in the danger room to “see if it passed” is how it comes back.

Do not open a “harmless” video to take the edge off. That is feeding. The edge comes off by time and by a different occupation, not by a smaller dose of the same thing. If you need a voice, call someone about anything ordinary. You do not have to say the word urge unless you want to. The point is to not be alone with the script.

If urges are constant and tied to despair, rage, or a marriage you are afraid to go home to, get help that is bigger than a webpage. Use the script tonight anyway. It is compatible with getting better help. The next lesson, the porn and shame cycle, is what to do with the feeling that shows up after, whether you held the line or not.

Scripture

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

James 1:14 (KJV)

Do this today

Action step

Write a three-line urge script on a card or in your phone’s lock-screen note — where you will go, what your body will do, and who or what you will tell. Rehearse it once this afternoon, not during the urge.

Reflection

In the last urge you remember, what was the first physical thing you did — and did it move you toward the habit or away from it?
